Roxborough

Part of the NW Philly family | ZIP Code 19128

The Short Version

Roxborough sits high on a ridge above the Wissahickon Creek and the Schuylkill River, and that geography tells you everything about what it’s like to live here. Hilly, green, connected to some of the best trails in the city, and deeply rooted in the kind of community pride that makes neighbors actually know each other. The commercial corridor along Ridge Avenue has everything you need day-to-day, good food, old-school businesses, a neighborhood brewery, without feeling like it’s trying too hard. Roxborough is the kind of neighborhood where people settle in and stay.

A Little History

The land that became Roxborough has been a crossroads for a long time. The Native American trail known as the Manatawna, which translates roughly to “an open road from our creator”, ran through here long before European settlers arrived. That trail became Ridge Avenue, which is still the neighborhood’s main commercial spine today. German immigrants were among the first European settlers, building mills along the Wissahickon Creek and cultivating the farmland on the ridge above. The neighborhood was part of Roxborough Township before being incorporated into the City of Philadelphia in 1854.

Much of the green space those early settlers valued is still protected today. The Wissahickon Valley Park, which runs along the neighborhood’s eastern edge, preserves the creek, the forest, and the trails that have defined this part of the city for centuries. Roxborough grew up around that natural landscape and never forgot it.

Roxborough Today

Roxborough is a neighborhood of two main thoroughfares, Ridge Avenue and Henry Avenue, and the hilly residential streets that run between them. Ridge Avenue is the commercial heart: local restaurants, old-school delis, a brewery, and enough daily conveniences that you rarely need to leave the neighborhood for anything.

What strikes people most about Roxborough is how community-oriented it is. The Friends of the Wissahickon, one of the most active volunteer conservation organizations in the city, counts many Roxborough residents among its most dedicated volunteers. Gorgas Park has an active neighborhood association. The Roxborough Development Corporation keeps the commercial corridor organized and invested. Community events like the Roxborough Spring Fest and Roxtoberfest in the fall draw the neighborhood together in a way that’s genuinely warm, not performative.

Things to Do

Wissahickon Valley Park, Multiple Access Points

Roxborough sits right on the edge of the Wissahickon, with trail access from multiple points along the neighborhood’s eastern and southern edges. Forbidden Drive, the wooded creekside path that runs the length of the park, is one of the great urban trail experiences anywhere in the country.

The Roxborough Staircases

Over a dozen outdoor staircases connecting the ridge of Roxborough down to Manayunk below, totaling more than 1,300 steps. A Philadelphia-only experience, and a legitimate workout.

Gorgas Park

The neighborhood’s main green space, with a playground, pollinator gardens, and a regular schedule of community events.

Upper Roxborough Reservoir Preserve

A quieter green space at the northern end of the neighborhood. Good for dog walks.

Roxtoberfest & Roxborough Spring Fest

The neighborhood’s two signature annual events, food trucks, craft beer, the Rockin’ the Ridge Car Show in spring, and a full fall festival in October.

Eat + Drink

Dalessandro’s Steaks, Henry Ave

Sixty-six years in and nothing has changed, which is exactly the point. A mom-and-pop cheesesteak shop with a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The New York Times keeps coming back. If you’re picking a side in the Dalessandro’s vs. Chubby’s rivalry, that’s between you and your conscience, but you need to try both.

Chubby’s Steaks, Henry Ave

The other half of the great Henry Avenue cheesesteak rivalry, directly across the street. Locals are fiercely loyal to one or the other. We’re staying out of it.

White Yak, Ridge Ave

Authentic Tibetan cuisine in Roxborough, one of those only-in-Philadelphia surprises.

New Ridge Brewing Co., Ridge Ave

A neighborhood brewery and taproom that’s become a community anchor.

T&F Farmers’ Pride, Ridge Ave

A longtime Italian deli and neighborhood institution. The kind of place that still does things the right way.

The Housing Stock

Roxborough is primarily a rowhome and twin market, with solid brick Philadelphia construction that wears well over decades. Many properties have been updated to add modern amenities while keeping original character intact. Some detached singles exist, particularly in the upper reaches of the neighborhood. The hilly terrain means some properties have rear garages or driveways, a genuine rarity in the city.

Getting Around

The Manayunk/Norristown Regional Rail Line serves Roxborough via the Ivy Ridge and Wissahickon stations, with Center City about 20-25 minutes away. The Wissahickon Transit Center serves more than 10 SEPTA bus routes. For cyclists, Schuylkill River Trail access connects the neighborhood to a regional network that extends well beyond the city.

The Bottom Line

Roxborough is one of those neighborhoods that doesn’t announce itself, it just quietly delivers. Great trails, solid housing, real community institutions, legendary cheesesteaks, and a ridge-top location that gives residents views and green space that most of the city can only dream about.
