NW Philly This Week: August 24–30

Monday, August 24 through Sunday, August 30 · All eight neighborhoods

Here is the thing about the last week of August up here: everybody is pretending summer isn’t ending, and the calendar is pretending right along with them. There are four separate trail crews going out this week. There is yoga fifty feet up a tree. There is a man coming to sharpen knives at a farm on Henry Avenue.

And on Sunday, after ten years away, the Manayunk Wall goes back to being a bike race.

Sunday: the Wall is back

For a decade the Wall has just been a hill you walk your bike up. On August 30 it returns to being the hardest four hundred meters in American road cycling.

The Philadelphia Cycling Classic comes back with 32 professional teams, seven of them at WorldTour level. The women’s race rolls out at 8:30am and covers 62 miles across four laps. The men start at 12:30pm and ride roughly eight laps for 120 miles. Every single lap goes up Levering Street — a 17 percent grade that has been ending people’s races since 1985.

Watching is free. There are no tickets and no gates. You pick a spot and you stand in it. Main Street is where the party is. The base of the Wall is where you hear it before you see it, and that noise isn’t decoration — it is genuinely part of how anyone gets up the thing.

Practical notes, because they matter: a lot of roads close to cars that morning, so walk in or ride in if you can. Bring water. And if you live along the route, you already know — your street is about to be a party.

Know about something we missed?

Send it to hello@nwphilly.com and we’ll put it in next week. Especially the small stuff — the porch concerts, the church rummage sales, the block parties. The big venues have publicists. Your neighbors don’t, and they’re usually the better night out.

Every listing here was checked against the venue’s own calendar before it went in. Things still move and things still get cancelled, so confirm with the venue before you drive over.
